How to recover pictures from a DOCX file

Use an image extractor or inspect a copy of the DOCX package to recover embedded pictures.

Start with a DOCX copy

Save your Word document as DOCX and keep the original. Legacy DOC files use a different format; simply changing the extension does not make them supported.

Use the extraction tool

Upload the DOCX on the Word extraction page, start the job, and inspect the recovered images. Select only the files you need. The page layout, text, and Word drawing objects are not the output of this workflow.

A local alternative for embedded media

DOCX is a package of XML and other files. On a disposable copy, use a ZIP-compatible archive utility to inspect the word/media directory. Where present, it contains embedded media. Never rename or edit your only copy, and do not expect an archive filename to describe its position in the document.

Understand crops and linked pictures

The document may store an uncropped asset and separate display instructions. A recovered picture can therefore show more than the visible crop. Pictures linked to external files may not be available in the package.

Check quality and retention

Inspect the returned dimensions and format before publishing. Extraction cannot recreate detail removed by prior compression. Online processing uploads your file; review the privacy policy and save temporary results before they expire.
